Regular Grand Lodge of Serbia

Looking back into the distant, but also into the more recent past, understanding the present, and believing in the future, we can say with certainty that Freemasonry in Serbia has been properly restored, and that it is on the right track. Its future prosperity is ensured, despite all difficulties – thanks to the existence, activities, and steady growth of the Regular Grand Lodge of Serbia.

Light came to this region in the 18th century, but only 90 years have passed since the year 5919, when the first Grand Lodge was established in today’s Serbia. The unusual tale of its foundation is intertwined with the region’s gloomy history. In the Masonic world, existing Lodges placed themselves under the protection of Grand Lodges of their respective states, and created new rites. Here, the historic circumstances dictated a different approach.

Only after the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia) was created in 1918, were conditions ripe for the foundation of the Grand Lodge. This Lodge went through painful cycles of rise and decline, and even through a period of deep dormancy, but Light and the Idea of Light were never extinguished. The desire for truth, justice, and freedom has always led the just here. Light returned; the Grand Lodge was awakened; and turbulent times passed. Great enthusiasm, work and struggle lead us to the present day.

Things have finally settled down. Once again, the RGLS has become a source of Masonic ideas, a protector of 25 real and complete Lodges, a brotherhood of a thousand good men, and a trunk supporting other branches. Thanks to this, the entire Masonic world recognises RGLS today as the real strength and the only holder of sovereign and supreme Masonic authority in Serbia – a legitimate successor to the first Grand Lodge, whose 90th anniversary we celebrate this year, 6009.

We hereby pay our respect to the struggle we have been through, the beauty we have recognised, and the strength and wisdom that have guided us through difficult times.
